#The full macOS Tahoe supported devices list
Apple published the compatibility list when Tahoe shipped in fall 2025, and it has not moved since. The rule underneath it is simple: every Apple silicon Mac qualifies, and among Intel machines only four made the cut. I have laid the whole thing out by product line below so you can find your model in one pass.

The quick self-check: open the Apple menu, choose About This Mac, and read the chip line. If it says M1, M2, M3, M4 or M5, you are in. If it says an Intel Core processor, match your exact model against the two Intel rows above. Everything else stops at macOS Sequoia (15).
#The four Intel Macs that made the cut
This is where the list gets its one genuine surprise, so it is worth slowing down. Two 2020 MacBook Pros look almost identical on a shelf, yet only one of them runs Tahoe. The 13-inch MacBook Pro from 2020 came in two versions. The four-port model uses a 10th-generation Intel chip and is supported. The two-port model uses an older 8th-generation chip and is not. Same year, same case, different answer. If you own a 13-inch 2020 Pro and are not sure which you have, count the Thunderbolt ports: four means supported, two means no.
The rest of the Intel four follow the same logic of newer-silicon-only. The 16-inch MacBook Pro from 2019 was the most powerful Intel laptop Apple sold at the time, so it survives. The 27-inch Retina 5K iMac from 2020 was the last Intel iMac and makes it in. The 2019 Mac Pro, the tower with the lattice front, is the workstation on the list. That is the complete Intel roster: two laptops, one all-in-one, one tower.
None of these four is a young machine. If you are running Tahoe on the 2019 Mac Pro or the 2020 iMac, treat this release as a graceful exit rather than a fresh start. The interface is heavier than it was on Big Sur, and there is no macOS 27 waiting for these chips.
#What Tahoe dropped
The models that lost support between Sequoia and Tahoe are all Intel, and they are the ones people most often ask me about because they were popular machines. If your Mac is on this list, Sequoia (15) is the newest macOS it will ever run.
- Every Intel MacBook Air. This is the big one. No Intel Air runs Tahoe, including the 2020 Intel Air. The M1 Air from the same year does run it, which trips people up.
- The two-port 13-inch MacBook Pro (2020) and all Intel MacBook Pros from 2018 and earlier. The 8th-generation chips are the line Apple drew.
- Mac mini (2018), the last Intel mini.
- iMac Pro (2017) and every Intel iMac from 2019 and earlier.
Notice the pattern: Apple kept only 2019-and-2020 Intel Macs with the newest chips of their era, then closed the door. Because Tahoe is the final Intel release, even the four survivors are on borrowed time. Every Mac announced after this point is Apple silicon by definition, so future macOS support lists will simply not have an Intel column.
#How long Tahoe will get updates
Apple never publishes a formal end-of-life date for a macOS version, so anyone who quotes you an exact one is guessing. What we can do is read the pattern. In recent years Apple has shipped security updates for the current macOS plus the two before it, which works out to roughly three years of patches per release once you count from its launch. On that pattern Tahoe would keep getting security fixes into the era of macOS 28.
For the Intel four specifically, coverage reporting around launch pointed to about three more years of security updates, which lines up with the three-versions rule. That is the honest ceiling: not a promise, but a reasonable planning number. If you are buying time on an Intel Mac, plan for roughly three years of safety and budget for an Apple silicon machine before that runs out.
#Tahoe vs Sequoia: should you upgrade?
The honest answer is: it depends on which side of the silicon line you sit on. On Apple silicon the upgrade is low risk. Tahoe brings the Liquid Glass visual redesign and the newer system apps, performance on M-series chips is fine, and you stay inside the security window without thinking about it. I run it on my own notched MacBook and would not go back.
On a supported Intel Mac the call is closer. You get the same heavier, glassier interface running on hardware that has no future past this release, and early point releases of any new macOS tend to iron out the rough edges over a few weeks. If your 2019 or 2020 Intel Mac is doing real work today on Sequoia, there is no penalty in waiting for a Tahoe point update or two before you commit. Nothing about staying on Sequoia for another month puts you at risk, since it is still inside the patch window.
One thing Tahoe does not change either way: the menu bar and the notch. If you are on a notched MacBook, the way macOS routes the menu bar around the camera cutout works the same as it did before, a layout quirk I dug into in the Mac menu bar guide. Tahoe is a redesign of how things look, not a rethink of what the notch does with your screen.
#Which of these Macs have a notch
This part matters if you came here to put that notch to work rather than just to check compatibility. Not every Tahoe-supported Mac has a camera notch. The notched machines are the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros from 2021 onward, and the MacBook Air from the M2 (2022) model onward. The two supported Intel laptops, the 2019 16-inch Pro and the 2020 13-inch Pro, have the old wide bezel and no cutout. The desktops obviously have none.
I point this out because I build NotchBay, a Dynamic Island-style app for the MacBook notch, and it has two hard requirements that this whole list feeds into: it needs macOS 26 (Tahoe) or later, and it needs a MacBook with a notch. Being on the Tahoe supported devices list is necessary but not sufficient. An M1 MacBook Air runs Tahoe, but it has no notch, so nothing renders. A 2020 iMac runs Tahoe and has no notch either. The island only appears where there is a physical cutout to anchor to.

Which devices are not compatible with macOS Tahoe?
Any Intel Mac older than the four that made the cut, plus the two-port Intel MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020). That covers every Intel MacBook Air, the Intel Mac mini (2018), the iMac Pro (2017), the iMac (2019 and earlier) and the older Intel MacBook Pros. If your Mac has an M-series chip it is supported; if it is an older Intel machine, it is not.
