Dynamic Island for Mac: Requirements, Permissions, Setup

A Dynamic Island for Mac needs three things: a notched MacBook (14 or 16-inch Pro from 2021, Air from the M2 generation), a macOS version the app you pick still supports, and up to five separate permission grants for the features that make one worth installing. The apps themselves are surveyed in the full notch app landscape; this page is the checklist that comes before and during the install.

#The hardware and OS floor

macOS has no built-in island. Every one of these apps is third-party software that draws a window over the menu bar area and lines it up with the camera housing, which means the hardware question comes first: does the Mac have a cutout for it to line up with?

The list is short. Every 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro from the 2021 redesign onward has one. Every MacBook Air from the M2 generation onward has one, in both the 13-inch and 15-inch sizes. Nothing else does: not the Intel MacBooks, not the wedge M1 Air, not the iMac, and not any external monitor. The OS floor is set by each app, and it varies more than people expect. Some notch apps still run on older releases; others target the current one and nothing else. NotchBay, for instance, requires macOS 26 (Tahoe) or later, with no exceptions, which makes the Tahoe supported-device list the second thing to check after the notch. There is a fallback worth knowing about, because a lot of people spend the day on a second screen with the laptop lid shut. Apps handle a screen with no cutout differently: some do nothing there, some draw a pill anyway. The feature set is the same, but it is a fallback rather than the experience the category is designed around, so weigh it before buying anything here.

#The permission map

This is the part that surprises people. A notch app that only shows now playing and a timer needs almost nothing from macOS. The moment it starts joining meetings, muting calls, transcribing speech or reading notifications, it needs permissions that macOS deliberately makes you grant by hand, one at a time, in System Settings under Privacy & Security.

Permission names as they appear in System Settings › Privacy & Security on macOS 26. Which of these a given app asks for depends entirely on which features it ships.

Two rules make this manageable. First, a well-behaved app asks only when a feature is switched on, so declining everything on first launch is a valid way to try one. NotchBay works this way: calendar, microphone, screen recording, accessibility, full disk access and notifications are each requested when the feature needing them is switched on, and the Settings window has a live Permissions page showing what is currently granted. Second, everything here is revocable. Turning a toggle off in System Settings breaks the feature that depended on it and nothing else.

Full Disk Access is the one that deserves a pause. It is the broadest grant in the list, and it is the price of reading the notification database, which is the mechanism behind mirrored messages on macOS. If that trade is not comfortable, leave it off and keep the rest of the app.

#The install order that avoids surprises

  1. Confirm the notch and the macOS version. Apple menu › About This Mac gives both in one panel. Match them against the app’s stated minimum before downloading.
  2. Download from the vendor’s own page or a Homebrew cask. Repackaged mirrors of Mac utilities are worth nothing and can be worse than nothing. If the app is on the Mac App Store, that is the simplest route; several in this category are not, including NotchBay, which is direct download only.
  3. Expect a Gatekeeper prompt on unsigned builds. Free and open-source notch apps are often distributed without a Developer ID signature, which means the first launch needs a manual override. The trade-off is unpacked in is Boring Notch safe. Signed and notarized builds open without that step; NotchBay is signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple.
  4. Quit any other notch app first. Two apps drawing in the same strip will overlap, and the symptom looks like a bug in whichever one you were testing.
  5. Grant permissions one feature at a time. Turn on one thing, grant what it asks for, check it works, move on. Granting five permissions at once and then finding the island blank leaves nothing to isolate.
  6. Give it a day before judging the footprint. Activity Monitor’s Energy tab across a normal working day is worth more than any vendor’s performance claim, this site’s included.

Uninstalling is the mirror image: quit the app, drag it to the Trash, then revoke its entries in Privacy & Security. macOS keeps those grants after the binary is gone, so an app reinstalled later can inherit permissions from a version you no longer remember approving.

#What the money actually buys

The split in this category is clean. Free apps, mostly open source, cover music, timers and basic activities well. Paid apps charge for the permission-heavy work: driving other apps during a call, a searchable clipboard, dictation, sharing pipelines. If now-playing controls are the whole wish list, the free options are the correct answer and nothing below changes that.

Two paid apps make the difference concrete. Alcove is deliberately small, built around music and battery activities. NotchBay, which this site makes, aims the same strip at work tasks. Read the NotchBay column with that bias in mind.

A paid app in this category is usually replacing several small utilities at once: a clipboard manager, a meeting launcher, a HUD restyler, a dictation shortcut. That is the only fair way to read the price. Against one free app doing one job well, a paid island looks expensive; against four menu bar utilities, less so. Which is also why the menu bar count tends to fall after one of these gets installed.

#Where Alcove beats NotchBay

Four specifics, not adjectives.

  • One-command install and upgrade. brew install --cask alcove puts it on the machine and brew upgrade keeps it current, which matters on a fleet or in a dotfiles setup. NotchBay has no cask and no Mac App Store listing; it is a direct download.
  • A smaller permission surface. Alcove’s feature set stops at music and battery activities, so there is less it can ask for. NotchBay’s useful half is exactly the permission-heavy half: Accessibility for call controls, Full Disk Access for mirrored messages and the Focus chip.
  • Less to configure. A two-job app has a settings screen you finish in a minute. A work layer has pages of toggles, which is a real cost on day one.
  • It probably does less work at idle. No benchmark is offered here for either app, but an app running call detection, clipboard capture and dictation has more to do than one drawing two activities. If footprint is the deciding factor, measure both on your own Mac.

#When the island does not appear

Most first-run failures come from the same handful of causes, and they are quick to walk through in order.

  • Nothing happens on hover. Check the app is actually running. These apps have no dock icon by design, so the only evidence is the notch itself and a menu bar item.
  • The island shows, but one feature is dead. Almost always a permission. Open Privacy & Security, find the category from the map above, confirm the app is listed and ticked, then quit and relaunch it. Several macOS permissions only take effect on a fresh launch.
  • It works on the laptop screen but not the monitor. Expected. There is no cutout on an external display, so an app either falls back to a floating pill or does nothing there.
  • Menu bar items sit on top of it. Apple documents what happens when menu bar items collide with the camera housing, and a crowded bar can push items behind the notch. Thinning the bar helps; hiding menu bar icons covers the options.
  • It vanishes in fullscreen. A fullscreen window hides the menu bar area, which is where the island lives. Behaviour there differs by app and is worth testing before buying.

#Questions that come up after install

Can two notch apps run at the same time?

They can launch together, but they will compete for the same strip of screen and draw over each other. Treat the category as one-app-at-a-time: quit the incumbent before evaluating a new one, or the comparison is measuring the overlap rather than either app.

Does a notch app conflict with an app that hides the notch?

Yes, in effect. Notch-hiding utilities black out the whole menu bar band so the cutout disappears into it, which is the opposite goal to drawing activities around it. Pick one philosophy.

#What this means for the notch

The notch is the only part of a MacBook screen that no window ever covers, and the requirements above are the toll for using it: specific hardware, a current OS, and a handful of permissions macOS makes deliberately awkward to grant. That friction is the honest reason this category stays niche rather than becoming a default. It also sets a fair test for any app in it. If a notch app cannot justify each permission it asks for with a feature you would miss, it has not earned the space. Work the checklist, grant one thing at a time, and let the strip prove itself feature by feature.
